Kumarakom is famous for its backwaters and lagoons. A ride through the Vembanad backwaters at Kumarakom is a thrilling experience to any nature lover. Kumarakom is a huddle of small islands on the Vembanad lake.

House boats or speed boats are available for backwater exploration. Depending on one's finances, a visitor can choose among them. Road to Kumarakom is also beautiful naturally, with small streams and lagoons on either side of the road. There are also paddy fields along the way. Small breeze coming from the the paddy fields and the lagoons are most enjoyable.

Kavanattinkara Bird Sanctury is another attraction of Kumarakom. There are a large variety of flora and fauna in this sanctury. Different species of migratory birds make this sanctury their home during seasons. The main attractions are local birds like the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron and the water duck, as well as the migratory Siberian cranes. The sanctury is spread over an area of 101 acres. The ideal time to visit the park is between June to August. For those, desirous of watching the migratory birds, November to February is the best time.
