Alappuzha -> House Boats
A cruise in a traditional houseboat along
the palm-fringed water-ways of Kerala is the most enchanting experience
for anyone who visit the southern part of the country. House boat cruises
are arranged for tourists in and around Alleppey, Kollam and Kumarakom.
House boats were called 'Kettuvallams', giant country crafts, measuring up
to 80 feet in length. Kettuvallams means that these boats are made by
tying together pieces of wood. Basically Kettuvallam was designed to
transport cargo to various destinations in Kerala. But, now these boats
are transformed to houseboats for tourists. The houseboats provide all the
modern facilities within the boat. The houseboats are constructed in a
luxurious manner with execellent furnishings and floorings. Bamboo is used
for the framework of the roof and splits of Bamboo are used for weaving
mat for roofing.
Most of the houseboats offers a sun deck, living and dining area and some
of them provide bedroom facilities. There are single bedroom houseboats
for two people and two bedroom houseboats for four people, with bath
attached facilities. There are AC and non AC rooms on offer in many
houseboats. The houseboats also has neat hygenic kitchens and spacious
passages. Professional cooks are available for the service of the visitors
in most of the cruises. The cuisine is of traditional Kerala flavour.
Traditional lanterns are used as lights in Kettuvallams.
Short curise on backwaters are also available on smaller boats. The
duration of these cruises are depends on the routes and can be covered in
3 to 6 hrs. Houseboats for groups can also be arranged for small cruises
on the backwaters. There are facilities for conference hall in some large
kettuvallams in Kerala.
The rice fields, villages, lush green shores amaze the visitor's sense of
beauty. In the nights, the cool, calm and breezy atmosphere makes the
jouney unforgettable.
