Mullangi (Radish) Sambar is a special Sambar with a different taste, very useful for a healthy diet.
Ingredients
Toor dal : 1 cup
White radishes cut into thick round discs : 2
Shallots : 10
Tamarind : 1 lime-sized ball
Sambar powder : 1 tbsp
Hing / asafoetida :1 pinch
Turmeric powder : 1 pinch
1/4 tsp sugar or 1/2 tsp grated jaggery
For tempering:
1 tbsp oil or ghee
A few curry leaves
2 shallots/pearl onions cut into long slivers
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp jeera / jeerakam / cumin seeds
Method


Pressure cook the toor dal with 2 cups water, the radish pieces and pearl onions for 3 whistles.
Soak the tamarind in 1/2 cup warm water and extract the juice.
Add the tamarind juice, turmeric, hing and sambar powder to the cooked Dal and radish.
Bring to boil on a medium flame, stirring gently.
Let the sambar boil for about 7 to 10 minutes.
Heat the oil for tempering and add all other ingredients.
Once the mustard pops up and the shallots turn a light brown, remove from fire and add to the sambar.
Mix well.
