In Hollywood there is a sub category of films known as disaster movies. Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, 10,000 B.C etc. are some of the films that come under this category. All this above films were directed by Roland Emmerich, who is considered the master of disaster genre in Hollywood. His latest offering is the film 2012.

This apocalyptic sci-fi thriller is the story of a researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in an effort to prevent the catastrophic prophecies of the ancient Mayan calendar from coming to effect. Divorced writer and father Jackson Curtis uses his knowledge of the ancient prophecies to ensure that the human race is safe.

The idea of the film is largely inspired by googlers typing 2012. The Mayan civilization have prepared calendar only till December 21, 2012. Some people started believing the world will come to an end on that day.

2012 is an adventure about a cataclysm that tells the heroic struggle of the survivors.
John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson acts in this film.

Emmerich is strong in conviction that the film will be a novel experience. His critics believe that the movie might end up being another Day After Tomorrow.
