The Director

Critics call his work disaster porn or cinematic sadism. Wannna be intellectuals are his biggest opposition. Roland Emmerich is the best man for blowing up the world and bringing end to civilization.

He is behind highly successful Sci Fi films which makes you excited with visual effects but leave your emotions untouched. Destructing famous international locations is his trademark. He is the director of Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, Universal Soldier, Star Gate, 10000 BC etc. So you know what to expect from his films. If you enjoy these kinds of films, 2012 will satisfy your quest for destruction.

The statue of Christ in Rio takes a tumble, a crack in the Sistine Chapel running between the fingers of God and Man are his latest addition. In this film Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Volcanoes are coming towards the characters from different directions.

The Story - Noah’s Ark

Chiwetel Ejiofor, a scientist realizes that earth's core temperature is overheating. He informs the President, the world will end in three years. Plans are made to construct a giant ark strong enough to survive the calamity by selling seats to rich people. John Cusack plays a divorced author with couple of kids. He learns about the ship and wanted to get his family on board.

CGI

No one can disagree about the creativity involved in the visualization of thoughts generated in the minds of writers to animators to director. The film scores near the middle and towards the end with eye pushing jaw dropping visual effects. With out these nail biting visual treat this film wouldn’t be distinct. The special effects are positively terrifying. The film should be watched for the work taken to create these scenes.

Reference to India will help the marketing of film in this sub continent.
As the doomsday argument of 2012 is in the air, people won’t miss it, plus the film matches the taste of Indian audience. Made at Rs. 900 crores, 2012 is director’s biggest movie and the most spectacular Hollywood disaster movie.

Negatives

The Human side of the film is undeveloped. There is very little mention of the Mayan calendar. If many monotonous scenes were re written and made less predictable, 2012 could have worked better. The usual mixes of families, scientist, President of US are arranged in between CGI effects.

Emmerich seems to find ways to destroy the world every time. The question that delves my mind is what’s left to destroy for Emmerich’s next? I heard he is sightseeing in Agra….
