Onam Pookalam
Onam Pookalam is a beautiful and traditional floral decoration made in Kerala, India during the Onam festival. Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. Pookalam is an important part of the celebration and is made using a variety of flowers arranged in intricate and colorful patterns on the ground.
The tradition of making Pookalam during Onam is believed to have started during the reign of King Mahabali, who is revered by the people of Kerala as a just and noble ruler. The legend goes that King Mahabali, who was known for his love for his subjects, used to visit his people during Onam. To welcome him, people started decorating their courtyards with beautiful floral patterns, and the tradition of Pookalam was born.
The Pookalam is made by first cleaning and leveling the ground, and then creating a circular design with rice flour. The design is then filled with a variety of flowers, usually from the marigold, chrysanthemum, and hibiscus families, arranged in intricate patterns and designs. The Pookalam is usually made in front of the house or in the courtyard, and people compete with each other to make the most beautiful and elaborate Pookalam.
Apart from being a beautiful decoration, Pookalam is also believed to be a symbol of prosperity and happiness. It is a way of showing respect and gratitude to the gods and goddesses who are believed to visit the homes during Onam. Pookalam is an integral part of the Onam celebration, and the festival is incomplete without it.
